Obtain remote access to HA

Good day, I am totally new to HA and would like to know the easiest and safest way to connect to HA remotely.

Thank you.

The Nabu Casa subscription is incredibly affordable, easy to use, and helps the creators by contributing a portion of the proceeds. It simply functions:)

It also allows for some integrations with voice assistants and other devices, and it has a trial term of, I believe, one month. Try it out!

I would recommend everything but port forward. In my case, I don’t want someone to discover a vital zero day that gets around the MFA in some way. I only suggest it if your firewall, such as Forti or Palo, has strong intrusion prevention capabilities and decryption. Get the subscription if you don’t want to; I assume most people will use voice or the standard voice assistants found in homes, such Alexa.

Mine is protected by a HAproxy instance, however my HA is also located in my DMZ alongside all of my other untrusted IOT devices. It works well because most gadgets that would communicate with HA already sit there.

I used Cloudflare, which was really simple and cost-free. There’s also a YouTube video explaining the procedure by Lewis from anything smarthome.

Check out tailscale.com. Really practical and simple to assemble. makes use of the wireguard protocol and requires no effort to set up a VPN.

I’ve begun use ZeroTier. All you need to do is set it up on your computer or phone that you use to access your home assistant. It can only be connected to certain machines, and you have to authorize them through the ZeroTier website.

The only problem I’ve had is that if my PC is linked to a VPN (I use PIA), it won’t connect to HA via zerotiers’ supplied IP address. Not much of an issue because I can still access remotely if I unplug PIA or using my local IP.
