What ought to be free but is sadly only available with a fee?

Because of the nature of business and capitalism, most of the things we use eventually become commodities and the costs associated with manufacturing and development go down, but we are still required to pay direct or indirect costs for them. If all I want to do is search the internet for free, why should I have to pay with my data? Why should I use all my attention span only to stay in touch with my loved ones and friends?

The question “What should actually be free?” seems nonsensical to me. Let’s break it down with a basic Economics 101 lesson. If you’re paying for something, it’s generally for one or both of these reasons:

  1. Maintenance Costs: The seller incurs costs to maintain the good or service.
  2. Demand vs. Supply: Demand for the good or service exceeds its supply.

If maintaining a good or service costs money, it logically cannot be free—otherwise, it wouldn’t exist for sale. Similarly, if demand surpasses supply, the good cannot be free, or it would quickly run out. Charging for it helps balance demand with the available supply.

Examples:
Search EnginesThey fall under the first reason. Many software-as-a-service (SaaS) products are similar; they need to charge to cover their maintenance costs. Offering them for free could make them unsustainable.
Math Tutors: They are an example of the second reason. Their time is limited, so even if their services were free, they could only teach a limited number of students.

  • Coffee Shops: Most businesses fall under both reasons. They need to cover costs like supplies, rent, and wages, and they must charge enough to avoid running out of stock.
This isn’t just about “business and capitalism”; it’s about the fundamental principles of resource allocation and scarcity.

There are numerous locations that charge for parking, have large sections of chairs reserved for patrons, and/or have restaurant-style seating in addition to areas that mark the beach as private property.

However, the content of your post particularly discusses having to exchange anything for anything that is a little excessive; it’s like whining that you have to pay attention to a friend in order to make one. Something has to be paid for in some way if it wasn’t just there, as in nature, and you didn’t pay for it.

Education and health

Nowhere is either free. Upon delivery, they may be provided without charge. However, that merely indicates that insurance, taxes, or some other ongoing expense is used to cover them.
